Jan.10, 2011.
Attendance: Errol Stewart, President Mike Wilhelm, LRT Jeremy Coates, west representative Lois Wellwood, development Ian, Shawnee Slopes Beth Tingle, berms Ron Goodfellow, traffic, development Mike Rawlings, vice president Lori Lozo, city representative Wendi Stewart, secretary Wayne Lassaline, resident Karen Kryzan, Block Watch John van Hemert, development Phil Ivers, treasurer
Minutes: Errol meeting called to order 6:30. Motion to pass the minutes from last meeting, Mike W. seconded Mike R., passed.
Presentation from Ian (resident of Shawnee Slopes) The community is in the process of redevelopment, the privately owned golf course (Shaw family) was recently sold to developers. 130 acres of greenspace within the 250 acre community will be redeveloped into 1600 units of high density, cluster units and single residential homes. The density will increase from 4.1 homes per acre to over 12 units per acre. Mike Wilhelm suggested FCC could be a useful source of info and ideas to aid in the situation. Also has the developer done a traffic study, and is there a market for these units? Discussion took place. Ron emphasized the need to work with the developers for the best possible outcome. This community is very similar to the land redevelopment at Jacques Lodges (MCF), we will support their efforts.

Please follow this link for the latest twist on traffic related changes in our community.
It appears that while none of our community-endorsed traffic calming measures took hold at the city, they came with some alternatives that make it look like their ideas and in the process we could gain some measures along 14 Avenue as well as 29, 26 and 24 Street.
Also, if you are interested in West LRT related news, you could subscribe to their newsletter here. |

The West LRT project office opened the 24 Street S.W. pedestrian bridge today. Global is covering it on this evening’s news and I will be sending out some public messaging over the next 24 hours on it. Folks can access the bridge on the north side at 24 Street S.W. and on the south side from either 25A Street S.W. or the back alley by the Shaganappi Community Association. Feel free to let your community members know.
Also, the north pathway is in a temporary state as the weather did not permit the contractor to pave it. It will be graded to its permanent alignment and paved in spring 2012 as weather permits.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Ryan Murray

About 30 community association representatives engaged in lively facilitated discussion on urban planning topics at the Federation's General Meeting on September 24. Representatives from the Mayor's Office and Land Use Planning & Policy were there to hear CA reps discuss the community association role in planning, and how the City can best engage communities, particularly in the implementation challenges of "Plan It Calgary". There was excellent dialogue and many suggestions for improving both City and community processes related to planning. CA reps indicated that they have several roles in planning i) they provide The City advice and feedback regarding development, ii) they may interpret, raise awareness and educate community members about Plan It Calgary at the community level, and iii) act as community stewards. Some of the other major themes that arose from the meeting included the need for greater collaboration between CAs, The City and developers - a "3-legged stool" approach. It was also apparent that some CAs felt they were receiving mixed messages from the City, thought the planning process was not sufficiently transparent, and therefore there was some lack of trust in City processes. CAs also considered how to improve their own operations, and suggested ways of improving their operations such as communication tools (e.g. social media, surveys), better inter-CA communications to share experiences and successes, and other enhanced resources. Many of the concerns and ideas raised echo and reinforce other discussions Federation planners and community members have been having with the City and development industry reps related to ongoing efforts to improve planning processes.
A report was prepared by the meeting facilitator with the aim of summarising the general themes and issues that were discussed at the meeting. Please go to this link, to read the entire report with a cover letter from the Federation of Calgary Communities. If you would like to see the raw data collected during the meeting or if you have any questions or comments, please contact either Bob van Wegen or myself.
Sincerely,
Natasha Kuzmak Urban Planner + Engagement Facilitator Federation of Calgary Communities 301, 1609 14th Street SW Calgary, AB T3C 1E4 T (403) 244-4111, ext 210 F (403) 244-4129 E
