Community Clean Up Information |
Please mark your calendars, the Community Clean Up event is September 18, 2010 from 9AM to 2PM.Compacter Trucks will be located at the Salvation Army Children's Village on 29th and 17th Ave (1731 29 Street SW). We are needing at least 10 pick-up trucks with drivers and volunteers who will drive around collecting debris from your back lanes. Please prepare your debris as indicated in the A-Z Recycling and Safe Disposal Directory. This document contains very useful information about the items you can or cannot dispose of and how to go about it. Please volunteer your pick-up truck and yourself to collect debris. We need volunteers for many others jobs. This is a huge event and we need your help. The e-cycling bin (for details see recycle-logic) will be located on the parking lot of the Alex Ferguson Elementary School on 14 Avenue at 26 Street (1704 26 Street SW). If you are thinking of donating some of your unwanted belongings (only good quality donations please, no junk), please check out the Smart Donating Guide from Goodwill Industries of Alberta. More information about the upcoming Community Clean Up to follow. For now we have collected some reading from the city. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT RESIDENTIAL PARKING ZONES
At Monday’s Council, (April 12 2010) the newly approved LRT residential parking zones were passed. As such, the Community Associations should begin working with residents to determine the needs for each municipal block. Residents MUST request a petition package through 3-1-1, and not through Traffic Engineering directly.

YOUR SHAGANAPPI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION IN ACTION THE NEIGHBOURWOODS PROGRAM and THE SHAGANAPPI COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY Your Shaganappi Community Association board members have been working hard behind the scenes on many issues including the West LRT project impacting our neighbourhood, Parks and Recreation improvements in our community, Fundraising, and Block Watch, to name only a few. Two City of Calgary and Shaganappi Community partnerships are happening soon, and we would like YOU to be part of them: The NeighbourWoods Program. “The NeighbourWoods Program is a residential street tree planting initiative developed by City of Calgary Parks to encourage citizens and communities to grow and preserve Calgary's urban forest. The City will: Provide a tree to be planted. Dig the hole for the tree. Provide tree care information and free training for the registered resident. Help with the planting process. Provide extended maintenance to the tree. You, the registered residents are responsible for: Planting the tree(s). Tending the tree(s), including watering and watching for pests and diseases. Contributing $30 per tree for an efficient watering bag” In the event that you wish to plant a tree where a shrub already exists, the City will remove the shrub for you to make way for the tree, provided it is on City property. Deadline for registration is March 31, 2010 – simply call the 24-hour 311 line and tell the Operator that you live in the Shaganappi Community and want to register for the program. Shaganappi Community Clean-up Day coming soon Once a year, in cooperation with the City of Calgary Bylaw Enforcement and Waste Management departments, residents have the opportunity to clean out their basements, garages, back alleys and sheds of “junk” that is not usually taken by the garbage disposal trucks. So if you have old mattresses, dead lawn mower, tree branches, construction materials in your alley, this Spring is the time to come clean! More details of this event will be clearly posted on your Community Website soon: www.shaganappicommunity.ca If you have any questions about either upcoming event, please call Jane Beddoe at 403.240.1111. |

Jane Beddoe/LRT Jon Mar/Alderman Mark Middleton/Bylaw Beth Tingle/Berms Wayne Lassaline Phil Ivers/Treasurer Karen Kyzan/BlockW. Nick Jay/Bylaw Officer Val Guey/LRT Lori Lozo/City CRC Clint Beaton/City Parks Wendi Stewart/secretary
Minutes: Passed. Thank-you to Mike R. for chairing the meeting in Dave?s absence. Financials: Phil I. year end at the end of March. Community News: Bylaw Officers spoke on funding available to communities for neighborhood clean-ups. Park is now again off leash the signage will be returned. Lori mentioned we need a letter of consent from the board. Graffiti removal continues please phone 311 to report, the city subsidy ends soon. Jon Mar/Alderman: LRT station to be named Shaganappi Point. The board thanks all involved and Jon Mar for supporting us. Question to Jon regarding the dirt for our sound berms. He stated the situation is quite good and he will work with us to that end. The Bow Trail plans will be revised, since the power lines have been removed, the berm can now be closer to the street. The Crowchild berm plans are ready. Beth was concerned with the timing. Jon asked for a workable committee for each berm and we will have captains in place. Jane spoke of an incident involving wrongful removal of city trees by the company ArbourCare who are working for the West LRT group. There was a total disregard of her concerns and the Landscaping plans were not being followed. Clint Beaton spoke of the mature trees value and the company?s accountability of their wrongful removal. Jon asked for a wish list from the community and will do his best to fulfil them. Traffic: Val was concerned with traffic off Bow Trail short cutting through his street. Also the short cutting on 33rd. St. Ron suggested the LRT group place the no turning sign in place. Request for sign on Val?s street of Local Traffic Only. Errol wanted to know who to complain to when the city does not operate within their own noise guidelines. By-law officers suggested complaints go to 311. All traffic complaints from the website go to Ron. Neighbourhood Woods: This is a program designed to reforest the city.

is in charge of the program and our area has been selected for this year's planting. Contact 311 with your name and address and the city will consult with you over requiring free trees and shrubs that are to be placed on the city property around your home. The city will also remove any dying trees or shrubs, especially willows which are dying due to drought. These new trees have a value of close to $400 each, they come in a 10 gallon pot and are 5?-8? tall. Once your trees are chosen the city will dig the hole, add mulch and drop the tree off at a central meeting point in our neighbourhood for pick-up. The tree drop-off will take place in September. The resident then plants the tree at no charge. Special watering bags are offered at a cost of $30. These bags help to better ensure the tree?s survival. Clint suggests we speak directly to our neighbours about the program, this is proven to have the most success. Jane Beddoe has kindly offered to be our Community leader in this program. Info will be given during membership drive. Ron asked Clint about planting an orchard in our park. Clint told us there is a orchard pilot project in Sunnyside. If we put in a request he will help fast track our orchard. Ron also asked about obnoxious weeds that are in our parks such as burdock, we are to call 311 or contact Clint directly. Casino: Remember, takes place March 20-21. A continued discussion on LRT, bridges, berms and traffic concerns. Meeting adjourned at 8:30pm.Next meeting March 9th at 6:30. |
