Community Clean Up Information |
Please mark your calendars, the Community Clean Up event is September 18, 2010 from 9AM to 2PM.Compacter Trucks will be located at the Salvation Army Children's Village on 29th and 17th Ave (1731 29 Street SW). We are needing at least 10 pick-up trucks with drivers and volunteers who will drive around collecting debris from your back lanes. Please prepare your debris as indicated in the A-Z Recycling and Safe Disposal Directory. This document contains very useful information about the items you can or cannot dispose of and how to go about it. Please volunteer your pick-up truck and yourself to collect debris. We need volunteers for many others jobs. This is a huge event and we need your help. The e-cycling bin (for details see recycle-logic) will be located on the parking lot of the Alex Ferguson Elementary School on 14 Avenue at 26 Street (1704 26 Street SW). If you are thinking of donating some of your unwanted belongings (only good quality donations please, no junk), please check out the Smart Donating Guide from Goodwill Industries of Alberta. More information about the upcoming Community Clean Up to follow. For now we have collected some reading from the city. Financials: Phil I. good. Cfip grant is due in July. Community News: We now have two new Bylaw Officers working our area. Mark Middleton and Nick Jay will help in removing graffiti, shopping carts, unwanted garbage in alleys, snow and ice removal, weed control, removing campers, etc. They will be working along side the police at District 2. Their job is to educate first and ticket later. We wish them success in their new job. The new Bylaw officers have been issuing warnings at the park. It apparently is an onlease area for dog owners. This is new news to all the residents of Shaganappi. Please contact Jon Mar our Alderman and let him know how you feel about this change in city policy. Dave will call Jon and work to have this policy changed. To reach our Alderman call 311, and leave him a message. Membership Drive: Will take place in April along with the Block Watch information. Development: Mike W. and Ron G. have sent the city planning department a letter stating the City regulations have become overly complex and prescriptive. Owners rights have become secondary to what Community Associations want. Shaganappi wants to encourage new development and prefers to find ways to help resolve differences when they occur. Traffic: School traffic has slowed down recently due to the amount of uncleared snow on the city streets. Wayne voiced concern over cars cutting through the neighborhood at alleyways off 17th Ave. West LRT: Mike W, Dave and Errol will attend a meeting with the city on Feb.18 to address the upcoming traffic issues we will face with the LRT. We want to know that the excess dirt will be piled where our berms are to be placed. The naming of our station has been delayed due to lack of city reps at the last meeting. Jacques Lodge: MCF Board will be meeting with Mike W. and Jane to explain their new development plan for their site on March 10, 7-9 pm. After an open house will be planned. Gully Clean-up: Is to take place on April 24, please plan on attending and invite your neighbors. Property Tax: Dave has been speaking with the city to reduce our house taxes during LRT construction. If we receive a reduction they will be sure to increase our taxes after construction is complete. Meeting adjourned at 7:30pm. Next meeting March 9th at 6:30. Thank-you Phil and friends for creating and maintaining our great ice rink! |

Since it’s inception in 1993 the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society has received thousands of calls relating to coyote and human interactions. The coyote is considered the most persecuted animal in North America an unwarranted designation. The coyote is a very intelligent and adaptable animal, as most pest species are, because they have learned to adapt around us and do not flee in the face of increasing human encroachment on natural habitats. The majority of calls we received were from residents of new communities that used to be grassland or farmland; on the perimeters of the city; close to farmland or those that back onto ravine or natural areas. These areas are natural wildlife corridors where coyotes, deer and small mammals frequent in search of food. The coyote lives in mixed grassland area and their diet consists mainly of rodents (mice voles, pocket gophers, Richardson ground squirrels etc.), hares and rabbits. Coyotes living near urban areas have been known to hunt cats or small dogs on occasion, but are most active at night and rarely stray away from their natural food source. Coyotes breed during the months of February and March. During this time many people will hear an increase in their barking and howling. Their young are born in late April or May. Many of the calls we received from residents were concerned with the safety of their children due to coyotes in the field close to their homes. Conflicts or attacks on people are rare and are usually the result of people coming too close to a mother trying to protect her den site. Education is the key to ensuring safety, respect and harmony with all wildlife species. We take great pride in looking out our windows to view the mountains and foothills we are lucky to live by and enjoy the accessibility of those natural amenities. But with that beautiful landscape also resides a variety of wildlife that call it home. It is important to understand that as a community we bare a large responsibility to understand the wildlife around us. Quick tips to reduce your interactions with coyotes: Good housekeeping: Maintain a clean yard free of debris; remove old wood piles or garbage as they can house mice. Have secure covered garbage containers and try not to place your garbage out until your garbage collection day. Note: For food waste such as meat or fish, etc. add a small amount of household ammonia to the garbage bag before disposing. Ammonia is a common animal deterrent. -
Be a responsible pet owner: -
You can minimize coyote and other wildlife interactions by keeping your pets in at night. DO NOT allow your pets to roam free or unsupervised for long periods of time. DO NOT place food outside for any domestic pets. This will only encourage wildlife to frequent the area. Note: The City of Calgary does have Bylaws to promote responsible pet ownership. Please refer to the city of Calgary’s website for more information. (www.calgary.ca) Take time to educate yourself about the wildlife in your community and make it a positive experience.
