Community Clean Up Information |
Please mark your calendars, the Community Clean Up event is September 18, 2010 from 9AM to 2PM.Compacter Trucks will be located at the Salvation Army Children's Village on 29th and 17th Ave (1731 29 Street SW). We are needing at least 10 pick-up trucks with drivers and volunteers who will drive around collecting debris from your back lanes. Please prepare your debris as indicated in the A-Z Recycling and Safe Disposal Directory. This document contains very useful information about the items you can or cannot dispose of and how to go about it. Please volunteer your pick-up truck and yourself to collect debris. We need volunteers for many others jobs. This is a huge event and we need your help. The e-cycling bin (for details see recycle-logic) will be located on the parking lot of the Alex Ferguson Elementary School on 14 Avenue at 26 Street (1704 26 Street SW). If you are thinking of donating some of your unwanted belongings (only good quality donations please, no junk), please check out the Smart Donating Guide from Goodwill Industries of Alberta. More information about the upcoming Community Clean Up to follow. For now we have collected some reading from the city. Monday November 23rd City Council approved the 2010 business plan and budget adjustments. Council approved the recommendations of Administration, and also made changes including:
- Reducing shot-term downtown parking rates
- Reducing Human Resources budget by $200,000 including the reduction of two positions
- Eliminating the Park n’ Ride fees at Bus Rapid Transit parking lots
- Adding $2 million for a two-year snow and ice removal pilot project
- Adding $200 thousand for graffiti abatement on private property in 2010
- Directing Administration to do more work to try to reduce our spending by an additional 1%. They will be bringing a report forward later this year about how that work will be done.
As a result of Council’s deliberations, the residential property tax rate increase was reduced from the 6.1 per cent approved last November to 4.79% for 2010. I believe that these decisions reflect the financial challenges we face as an organization – lower than expected revenues and citizen concern about affordability coupled with high expectations for service delivery in a growing city. If you have questions about the business plans and budgets, please see the City’s website that is available to help you understand our financial situation, service priorities and the adjustment details. www.calgary.ca/taxtalk Happy New Year! |

We will have a new green approach to community business. Dave W. thanked everyone who was involved with Shagtoberfest. It was a great time. Casino will be held March 20-21, 2010. Mike W. brought archival photos of Shaganappi Point. They will be blown-up and mounted in hall. Mike W. discussed Jacques Lodges. There are 13 acres. They want to develop 3 acres and sell 10. We are in favor of redevelopment, but no towers. Town homes like Garrison Square what the community would like to see. Jane B. is concerned over the traffic of 1000 more people to the existing roads. Meeting Minutes Attendees: Dave Wilson; Mike Wilhelm; Wayne Lassalind; Jane Beddoe; Mike Rawling; Phil Ivers; Ron Goodfellow; Karen Dryzan; Achilefs Govtis; Ryan Chipman The minutes from the AGM in June were presented. It was moved to accept the minutes as tabled by Mike Wilhelm. Motion seconded by Mike Rawling. Approved. Phil I. presented the financial summary. It was mentioned that some rental groups have been inquiring about internet access at the hall. Phil I. agreed to look into the options for providing a hot spot. A date for the next casino has been established. It will be held on March 20 & 21, 2010 (Saturday and Sunday). Ron presented the lasted news in the Development area. The Salvation Army Children's Village has a development permit, to which there are no objections from the community association. A community cleanup, similar to the one held recently in Forest Lawn, was discussed as being something the community should investigate further. Mike Rawling agreed to follow up. Mike W. mentioned that the city recently passed the Westbrook ARP. Mike W. presented a summary of the developments with the West LRT, Shaganappi Golf Course and MCF. Discussion ensued regarding the sound-walls, which won't be installed until the end of the construction phase. Construction contracts are going to be awarded in October 2009. The golf course renovation is complete, and was managed very well by the contractors. Unfortunately, it was not so well managed by the golf course management (still lots of work to be done). Still requires proper fencing, landscaping and a water management system for the pond. The MCF (Seniors' Facility) meeting went well. The plan is to tear down the existing buildings by July 2010, and eventually replace with 300 units, likely 3 buildings of 100 units each. The hope is that it will be a low-rise, medium-density design, and that the developers resist any requests to put public housing on the site. Rob Smith, president of the Alexander Ferguson Parents' Council has requested that the community association support their bid to have traffic calming measures installed by the school along 14th Avenue. Traffic issues, primarily speeding, are presenting a significant danger to the school children. Hard-scaping could eliminate or at least mitigate these issues. He would like a letter of support from the community association. There was consensus from the board that support would be offered. Discussion ensued around the strategy required to get city hall to approve the plan. Shagtoberfest will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2009. 25A Street, north of 14th Avenue, now has parking restrictions. Photos of the 1901 royal visit from the Glenbow have been sourced by Mike W. He is looking for a method of displaying them in the hall. |
