July 21,2010

The Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life are joining the Calgary Centennial Arenas expansion team to assist in the construction of the third arena at the facility.

The Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life announced today that they have made a $1 million contribution to Calgary Centennial Arenas as part of their ongoing commitment to the community. In addition, the facility will be renamed the Flames Community Arenas.
“For over 30 years now, this community has supported the Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life,” says President and CEO Ken King “which has offered us the privilege, opportunity and responsibility to give back.  This expansion project will offer much needed ice time for local residents.”

“The Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life has knitted itself into the fabric of Southern Alberta communities,” says Brian Fleming, Chair of the Centennial Expansion Steering Committee. “SWAS is very pleased to have a passionate and committed partner join the Civic, Provincial and Federal governments as partners in our Building Goals, Building Community project.”

Through various initiatives, the Calgary Flames Hockey Club and their charitable arm; the Flames Foundation for Life are committed to education, medical research, health, amateur sports and recreation.

The Southwest Arena Society (SWAS) is the owner and operator of the Centennial Arenas, which is a public facility open to all without preference. The SWAS mission is to meet the growing and shifting needs of the community by providing a long term sustainable recreation facility for all Calgarians.

“With the extremely generous donation of the Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life we are closer to our fundraising goal and the reality of a new arena. We need your ideas, volunteerism and dollars to help to raise the remaining funds to complete the project”.
To provide all users, parents and fans an opportunity to be part of this exciting project we are looking for volunteers from Trails West, Glenlake, Mount Royal and the greater community to assist with the FLAMES COMMUNITY ARENAS BUILDING GOALS BUILDING COMMUNITY Fundraising Phase.
